Tragedy struck in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night as an American Airlines passenger jet carrying 64 people collided midair with a Black Hawk military helicopter while attempting to land at Reagan National Airport.

The aircraft plunged into the icy Potomac River just before 9pm, triggering an intense search and rescue operation.

Emergency teams have been combing through three debris fields, with divers battling harsh conditions to recover bodies from the freezing waters.

Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, but initial reports suggest there may be no survivors.
